Vion sells German slaughterhouse to ABP Food Group

Vion Food Group has agreed to sell another meat facility in Germany as part of the Dutch group's exit from the country.

The deal for the slaughterhouse in Buchloe has been struck with Ireland-based ABP Food Group. The Buchloe site handles about 90,000 cattle annually and has a workforce of around 270, according to a statement.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Vion said the deal provides a “strong foundation” for the future of the Buchloe site, while securing “reliable market access” for farmers and customers.

“Throughout the process, ABP has shown clear and consistent commitment, reinforcing confidence that the site will be in capable hands,” the statement read.

Vion CEO Tjarda Klimp said: “Buchloe is located in one of Bavaria’s strongest livestock regions and has a long-standing role in the regional supply chain. ABP as the potential new owner is well positioned to build on these strengths and further develop the site.”

The divestment of the Buchloe facility follows the April sale of Vion’s Crailsheim and Waldkraiburg locations, marking the latest chapter in the group’s phased withdrawal from the German market.

Vion began closing meat assets in Germany in 2023 and a year later announced plans to exit the German market entirely.

Vion said the proposed transaction with ABP Food Group has been arranged as an asset deal.

The company added that Buchloe will continue running as normal until the sale is completed.

During that period, Vion will keep current supply chains in place, maintain relationships with suppliers and customers, and continue to meet its existing obligations.

Completion of the deal is dependent on antitrust clearance, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

In February, ABP Food Group said it was assessing around 230 possible job cuts at its cutting and deboning plant in Waterford.

In January, the company had announced it would close its Co. Tyrone site in Linden, located on the Granville Industrial Estate in Dungannon, with the loss of 338 jobs.

ABP Food Group said at the time the decision was based on adapting to “trading conditions and market trends”, along with the need to consolidate.
