Mellitah Oil and Gas Company has completed a key phase of its Bouri gas exploitation project ahead of schedule, marking an important step in Libya’s efforts to boost domestic gas supply and reduce flaring.
The company confirmed that manufacturing and assembly work for major equipment has been finalized, with overall progress reaching more than 69%, exceeding the planned 62%. The milestone follows the recent installation of compressors at the Sabratha offshore platform, a critical component of the project’s infrastructure.
The $1.565 billion development, awarded to Saipem in August 2023, is among Libya’s largest current upstream investments. By the end of 2025, roughly $928 million had already been deployed. An official ceremony in Ravenna, Italy, marked the completion of this phase, after which key components were shipped to the offshore Bouri field.
Once delivered, the project will move into heavy lifting and installation works for platforms 3 and 4. Engineering upgrades include new subsea pipelines linking the field to the Sabratha platform and onward to the Mellitah industrial complex, strengthening integration across Libya’s offshore gas network.
Designed to process up to 125 million cubic feet per day, the project is also aligned with National Oil Corporation goals to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030.
According to Libyan energy expert Mahmud Mohammed, production is expected to begin in September 2026, supporting domestic energy demand while enabling incremental exports. As Libya looks to stabilize and expand its energy sector, the Bouri project underscores a broader push toward efficiency, infrastructure modernization, and monetization of previously flared gas.
